Attending four Olympics, four Commonwealth Games and six World Championships, Stephen Moneghetti’s success as a marathon runner is legendary. His Commonwealth Games debut in 1986 continues to be the fastest debut ever achieved by an Australian and his subsequent Commonwealth Gold Medal win in 1994 was the culmination of years of hard work. It was these spectacular achievements which saw his induction to the Athletics Australia Hall of Fame in 2016.
Current experience:
Since retiring at the Sydney Olympics he has gone on to forge a career in sports administration as the Chair of the Victorian Institute of Sport, Mayor of the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games Village and is currently a Board Member of Sport Australia & Commonwealth Games Australia. In 2018, his position as Chef de Mission of the Australian Team for the Delhi, Glasgow & Gold Coast Commonwealth Games culminated in one of the most successful team performances.
Previous experience:
In 2014, Stephen was granted a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant services to athletics and mentoring young Australians and is currently engaged in multitude of numerous charities and not-for profits as an ambassador. Particularly notable is his stint as race director for the Run for the Kids Fun Run which has seen the event raise over fifteen million dollars for the Royal Children’s Hospital in Victoria.
