As someone who led his nation in the last years of amateur rugby, Nick Farr-Jones is a natural leader and, as an amateur sportsman, has uniquely experienced over two decades working in a business environment. He has led both world class sports people but has also been intricately involved in executing global business plans, strategic development and motivating people to achieve, individually and collectively, their objectives and dreams.
Current experience:
Today, he hosts an annual Sports United event for Wesley Mission’s work with the homeless in our community. Over the last 9 years close on $1m has been raised from these lunches.
Previous experience:
Nick attended Newington College where he played in the school’s 2nd XV. He went on to study law at Sydney University and made the University’s 1st XV at age of 18. He was selected to play in the Wallabies in 1984 debuting on the Grand Slam tour of the UK and Ireland. He played 63 tests in an amateur rugby career for a decade captaining the Wallabies to win the 1991 Rugby World Cup. He Captained a World XV in 1992 in 3 tests against the All Black’s celebrating New Zealand’s centenary of Rugby. Inducted into the Australian and International Rugby Halls of Fame and awarded an Order of Australia in 1992 for services to rugby. Nick recently served as Chairman of NSW Rugby for 5 years standing down in 2015.
He was a lawyer for a decade before moving to Paris for 4 years when he joined the French International Bank, Societe Generale. He returned to Sydney in 1999 and headed the Bank’s mining finance team for a decade before joining the private equity group Taurus Funds Management who invest and lend globally in the mined resources sector.
Nick has been a Director of the NRMA, a Councillor of the City of Sydney and a Senator of the Sydney University.
He is a former Senator of the University of Sydney, Director of NRMA, Councillor of the City of Sydney and Patron of the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Foundation. He was a Director of the Wesley Mission and recently created his own charity known as Touch Life raising awareness and funds to support Wesley’s work in the homeless space. He’s also the Chair the Board of Stand Tall which, amongst other things, hosts an annual student day of hope, inspiration and leadership attracting thousands to the annual event.
Above everything Nick Farr-Jones counts the most successful and satisfying years in life as the daily interaction with his wife Angie and four children. He is an engaging speaker bringing world class sporting anecdotes and experiences into the realms of business life whilst encouraging and motivating individuals and teams.
